Founded in 1951 and serving the metro area, 11Alive is an Atlanta news station which is a staple in the community. On Tuesday, August 11, NABJ JSHOP students toured 11Alive and found out what it meant to be a real Atlanta journalist. During the visit, students spoke with traffic correspondents Doug Turnbull and Rachel Cox-Rosen, anchor Faith Jessie and meteorologist Danielle Moss. The journalists spoke on the importance of remaining open minded and exploring different career options within the industry.
The students were even allowed to see the news in action. They sat in on a live news broadcast where the anchor was covering a shooting investigation in Bartow County. They then went to the producing room, where employees controlled all live feeds, commercials, and delays.
Students also interviewed Doug Turnbull and Faith Jessie about their careers and advice for future journalists. Jessie gave the NABJ JSHOP students a lot of tips including building confidence. Students got an inside look on how their days would be as college students working for 11Alive. The biggest piece of advice Turnbull gave was, “Learn to write. The more you write, it informs how you speak, and the more you speak, it informs how you write. It’s all one big circle.”
Students were also given the opportunity to tour the control room, where they direct and produce the show. While touring, they had the chance to watch how producers direct a live show and how they respond to things that went wrong during the live broadcast. They also saw how the team communicates during a broadcast and how the team times commercial breaks.
Finally, students had the chance to tour the podcast room at 11 Alive, where they learned from the director of the show about how the team films podcasts and directs them. They also learned how podcasts are the future of journalism and how they are slowly taking over.
