This year, NABJ convention-goers have several options for eating near the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. Here are a dozen restaurant options, both close and not too far. 

Less than a 10-minute walk

1. Uptown Cantina

2301 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. N. Unit 200

Price Range: $11-$30 

A five-minute walk from the convention, Uptown Cantina features Mexican and Fresh-Mex offerings, with a few choices for those who don’t like Mexican food, such as burgers. The menu offers nachos, tacos, salads and more, complemented by handmade cocktails. https://uptown-cantina.com/.

2. Texas de Brazil

Price Range: $31-$50

Texas de Brazil, about a four-minute walk, brings churrasco culture to the United States. In addition to the flame-grilled meats brought to diners’ tables, the menu includes chef-crafted salads, roasted vegetables, imported cheeses and charcuterie. https://texasdebrazil.com/.

3. Mugshots Grill & Bar

Price Range: $11-$30

Mugshots Grill & Bar is a two-minute walk. The bar experience sports a theme of  “Havin’ a Good Time!” and happy hour, from 3 to 6 p.m., has half-price domestic drafts, well drinks and wine. 4. Southern Kitchen + Bar

Price Range: $11-$30

Southern Kitchen + Bar, also called The Southern Birmingham, is one of the city’s premier bar and restaurants and a three-minute walk from the conference. It boasts “a casually chic atmosphere offering the best entertainment with the hospitality of a true Southern gem.” The bar and restaurant serve lunch and dinner seven days a week. https://thesouthernbirmingham.com/

5. Todd English P.U.B.

Price Range: $8-$27

Todd English P.U.B. is a three-minute walk. It has a carvery, raw bar and grill as well as a selection of 50 international bar and keg beers. The P.U.B. brags “the best of England stateside.” http://www.toddenglishpub.com/.

6. Santos Coffee

Price Range: $3-$32

Santos Coffee & Bar Uptown is a three-minute walk from the Birmingham conference center but it goes to Guatemala for its coffee beans. Varieties include Yellow Bourbon, Obata, Marcelleza, Catuai and Caturras. https://santos-coffee-farmers.myshopify.com/

7. Eugene’s Hot Chicken

Uptown, 2268 9th Ave N

Price Range: $11-$30

Eugene’s Hot Chicken is so close: just one-minute away. This location serves everything from hot chicken to wings, fingers, fries, coleslaw and desserts. https://www.eugeneshotchicken.com/.

8. K & J’s Elegant Pastries

Price Range: $10-25

K & J’s Elegant Pastries is a bakery that’s a one-minute walk. It specializes in serving custom cakes for all occasions while offering several other sweet treats such as cupcakes, pastries and cookies. https://www.kjselegantpastries.com/

9. Gus’s Hot Dogs

Price Range: Under $10

Gus’s Hot Dogs, about a 16-minute walk and brags on its website that it “proudly continues the great heritage of Greek-owned hot dog purveyors who have served the Birmingham community for decades.” Its menu includes hot dogs, lunch sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches. https://gusshotdogs.com/.  

10. Pizza Grace

Price Range: $6-$27

Pizza Grace is about a 21-minute walk from the conference. It uses elegance and refinement in its approach to cooking, baking and hospitality. It also works with local farms and producers to serve pizza and bread. https://pizzagrace.com/

11. Bamboo on 2nd

Price Range: $11-$30

Bamboo on 2nd is an Asian-inspired restaurant about a 16-minute walk from the convention center. It’s a neighborhood restaurant/bar that serves affordable Pan-Asian food. https://www.bambooon2nd.com/.

12. Fife’s Restaurant

2321 4th Ave N

Price Range: Under $10

Fife’s Restaurant is a locally owned and operated place around since 1959 about a 14-minute walk from the conference. Its menu changes daily to keep the food fresh. http://fifesbham.com/
