{"id":514,"date":"2018-08-01T14:48:06","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T19:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/?p=514"},"modified":"2023-08-01T11:36:01","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T16:36:01","slug":"election-conflict-forces-nabj-board-to-redo-media-rep-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/election-conflict-forces-nabj-board-to-redo-media-rep-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Election conflict forces NABJ to redo vote for media-related representative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By MAYA KING<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NABJ Monitor<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a candidate for NABJ\u2019s media-related representative withdrew from the race, but was not taken off the ballot, votes for that position were thrown out and a separate election is set to determine who will hold the office. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The board of directors decided Tuesday to hold what it is calling a \u201crunoff\u201d election for the media-related representative position, two weeks after the annual convention. Typically, NABJ members vote prior to and during the convention, and results are announced during the annual Salute to Excellence gala and awards show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second round of voting will open at noon Aug.13, according to Michelle Fitzhugh-Craig, NABJ\u2019s interim elections chair. This gives the 433 media-related members who are eligible to vote for that position\u2014including those who may have voted for the candidate who withdrew\u2014another opportunity to elect their representative. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members will continue to use VoteNet, NABJ\u2019s online election vendor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terry Allen, CEO of 1016 Media in Dallas, Texas, and Tanzi West Barbour, chief communications officer for Wayfinder Foundation in Washington, D.C., are still in the running for the position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haniyyah Sharpe-Brown, a Philadelphia-based communications strategist and longtime NABJ member, said she suspended her campaign on July 10 after Student Education, Enrichment and Development Chair and Student Projects Director Alexis Mitchell said Sharpe-Brown\u2019s \u00a0involvement with the Student Multimedia Project as a mentor while running for a board position posed a conflict of interest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharpe-Brown was told that the student project sponsorship could be viewed as an unfair advantage for mentors who also are running for office. Food, travel and lodging are covered by NABJ for students and mentors participating in the student project. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no language in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nabj.org\/page\/Constitution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NABJ\u2019s constitution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nabj.org\/page\/2018ElecRule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">election rules<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that disqualifies student project participants or members of any task force from running for office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interim Parliamentarian Melanie Burney said she was not aware of the lack of protocol relating to members\u2019 involvement with the student project and elections eligibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two additional board members said they did not know about the voting discrepancy until the board meeting Monday. Voting for new members of the board of directors began July 2. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt like [the conflict] put me in a position where I had to choose,\u201d Sharpe-Brown said. So, she opted to withdraw from the race and serve as the public relations lead for the student project, a role she has had for the last three years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharpe-Brown submitted her letter of withdrawal dated for July 10 to Mitchell, then-Elections Committee Chair Sharyn Flanagan and NABJ President Sarah Glover. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than two weeks passed between Sharpe-Brown\u2019s withdrawal from the race before the ballot was amended to reflect the change, according to Fitzhugh-Craig. Flanagan, her predecessor, resigned from her post as elections chair Monday\u2014the same day Fitzhugh-Craig was named as interim elections chair\u2014due to a family emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe last thing you want to do is tamper with a ballot,\u201d Burney said. \u201cThat could undermine the whole process. If I told you, \u2018We went in, but we only changed this,\u2019 then it makes you wonder what else has been tampered with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this atypical second election is a means of maintaining the integrity of NABJ\u2019s democratic process, the need for it exposes holes in the organization\u2019s voting policies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHad there actually been a rule in writing, we could have avoided this,\u201d Sharpe-Brown said. \u201cI just don\u2019t feel like any candidate should be put in a position like this again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not the first time an NABJ member interested in running for election has had to choose between seeking a national position and remaining involved with the student project. In 2013, Khorri Atkinson, a candidate for student representative, was also selected for that year\u2019s student project. There were no written rules outlining his eligibility for office as a participant on the project. However, project leaders removed him from the project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s just common sense. That\u2019s a classic conflict of interest,\u201d Atkinson said. \u201cI think NABJ should have known better.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then-Elections Chairman Mike Woolfolk recommended that the board of directors develop a policy that clearly outlines the relationship between running for office and participating in the Student Multimedia Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said Woolfolk: \u201cIt is entirely up to the board to take action on those recommendations,\u201d displaying a digital copy of the report he submitted to the board in 2013. \u201cI\u2019m just finding out, unfortunately, that that never happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommendation read: \u201cThis policy could be as simple as including on the SEED application form a sentence stating, \u2018a student selected to participate in Student Projects who also wishes to seek election to the Board of Directors at the same convention must choose one or the other, but will not be allowed to do both.\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bob Butler, who was elected president in 2013, said he does not recall receiving Woolfolk\u2019s recommendation. As president, the election committee\u2019s report is one of the first that he would have reviewed after the convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cObviously, we dropped the ball,\u201d Butler said. \u201cIt\u2019s not the policy. It\u2019s making sure it\u2019s clear on the application that if you want to run for office, and you want to be part of the student project, you can\u2019t do both.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glover, who was elected to her first term as NABJ president in 2015, seemed to have a different opinion on whose responsibility it is to prevent discrepancies like this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt the end of the day, the Elections Committee does set the rules,\u201d Glover said. \u201cSo we will ask for strong language to set a recommendation for the next election cycle. That could provide more clarity to all stakeholders on the front end.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remains to be seen whether the board of directors will end its back-and-forth with the Elections Committee and move to amend its eligibility procedures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t dwell on it,\u201d Sharpe-Brown said. \u201cAm I disappointed? Absolutely.
