{"id":3967,"date":"2025-08-09T13:05:59","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T18:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/?p=3967"},"modified":"2025-08-09T13:06:02","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T18:06:02","slug":"karamu-house-is-still-a-special-gathering-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/karamu-house-is-still-a-special-gathering-place\/","title":{"rendered":"Karamu House is Still a Special Gathering Place"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By: Khai Phinney<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NABJ JSHOP Reporter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NABJ JSHOP students visited the Karamu House in Cleveland on Tuesday to learn about the venue\u2019s history and plans for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karamu, which means a joyful place of gathering, is the oldest Black theater in the world and has been around for over 100 years. Rev. Photo by NABJ JSHOP Staff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>JSHOP students were able to gain insight into the meaning and purpose of the historical theater as it\u2019s undergoing renovation. They\u2019re creating more space in the building by adding a new awning, removing some walls and opening a kitchen inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Griffin mentioned the impact made on neighborhoods like Hough, Glenville and the Fairfax community. Griffin described this theater as \u201crich in culture.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the struggles that Griffin stressed is that not enough youth and mainstream media are covering the parts of Cleveland that are important to Black people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe still need journalists to tell our stories,\u201d said Griffin, who represents Ward 6. Due to what he views as a setback, members of the theater and community have been working to increase the neighborhood&#8217;s recognition, adding in things like affordable senior housing, grocery stores and even health care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have to advocate for my residents,\u201d Griffin told the students, as he believes a lot of the members in the neighborhoods are lacking necessities.
