{"id":3831,"date":"2025-08-08T11:57:44","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T16:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/?p=3831"},"modified":"2025-08-08T11:57:45","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T16:57:45","slug":"leaders-outline-how-media-companies-can-remain-relevant-in-face-of-declining-revenue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/leaders-outline-how-media-companies-can-remain-relevant-in-face-of-declining-revenue\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaders outline how media companies can remain relevant in face of declining revenue"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Lizzy Nyoike, NABJ Monitor Digital<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Media leaders at the National Association of Black Journalists convention discussed the ways journalism can survive and thrive in the new media landscape, as traditional revenue streams shrink and competition rises across content platforms.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Money Matters: Resilience, Revenue &amp; Reinvention in the Modern Media Economy panel, panelists shared ways of maintaining newsrooms while staying true to the integrity of journalism.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is about making sure that we come up with a business model that allows us to be sustainable and to grow both our audience and our revenue,\u201d said Monica Richardson, senior vice president at USA Today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While budgets are being cut and staff being laid off, Richardson emphasized the importance of intentional reinvestment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cResilience requires leadership to think beyond short-term survival and focus on opportunities that drive long-term value,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard Dyer, president and general manager at WUSA9 in Washington, D.C., said understanding how money flows in and out of newsrooms is essential for sustainability. He also emphasized the need for both leadership and staff to be educated on revenue streams, advertising and subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innovation isn\u2019t solely about content but how content is monetized, said Matt Moran, senior managing vice president of Local Media Gray Television.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou really need to understand the business you\u2019re in,\u201d Moran said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John F.
