It inspires tomorrow\u2019s leaders to question why that\u2019s the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kennedy Wibert, a center on the Tennessee State University men\u2019s football team, and Se\u2019Quoia Allmond, a point guard at Jackson State University, defied all odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/JSHOP21-HBCU-Athletes-by-Marquette-Walker-WBB.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" src=\"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/JSHOP21-HBCU-Athletes-by-Marquette-Walker-WBB.jpg\" alt=\"College student holds basketball.\" class=\"wp-image-2571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/JSHOP21-HBCU-Athletes-by-Marquette-Walker-WBB.jpg 512w, https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/JSHOP21-HBCU-Athletes-by-Marquette-Walker-WBB-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Se\u2019Quoia Allmond, a point guard at Jackson State University, spurned big name colleges to attend an HBCU.  <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Allmond is the first top 100 ESPN girls basketball player in the country to play for an HBCU and is obsessed with creating her wave.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it means a lot \u2018cause it opens a lot of doors for young athletes, and they see that they don\u2019t have to always do what they see everyone else doing; they can create their path or own journey,\u201d said Allmond regarding her choosing an HBCU over her Power 5 offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quality of these statements isn\u2019t often considered when choosing schools, and few are willing to take the risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanna be a four-time champion coming out of Jackson (State),\u201d Allmond said. Her goals were already in place before making this decision, as she also plans on expanding her brand Certified Bucket Get (CBG) in college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilbert led Middle College High School to their first Regional Championship in his senior year in 2019. Afterward, he received his offer from TSU. Rod Reed led the team as head coach, and now they have Eddie George taking over the position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have all the hype in the world right now. Everybody\u2019s talking about Tennessee State, all eyes are on us right now, and our main goal is just to win the national championship,\u201d Wilbert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common idea is that these students want to play ball and live out their dreams. Everybody wants to get paid, but to get paid, you have to master your craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I took my first visit here, it felt like home,\u201d Wilbert said. He made that clear because this is his sophomore year, and he will be a junior in his second semester because of the extra summer classes he took while training as a Division I athlete.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got weights in the morning. After weights, it\u2019s practice. After practice, it\u2019s class. After class, I go to the cafe or whatever to replenish my body,\u201d said Wibert, recalling his schedule. \u201cThen I go to another class, and then after that class, I have meetings later on that evening, (and) after those meetings I come in my room to do my homework.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often we hear from the coaches or athletic directors, but this is mainly Wilbert\u2019s future.
