Eating less or sleeping less can be signs that you are experiencing stress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#a200a3\">Practice Mindfulness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes what happens is when you\u2019re triggered by something traumatic that you\u2019ve experienced, whether it\u2019s racial trauma or some other trauma, you\u2019re not always in the present moment,\u201d Reynolds said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being grounded in the present helps people with trauma-induced stress, anxiety or depression, she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ways to practice mindfulness involve using your physical senses of sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell to enjoy the present moment. Focus on a comforting feeling or song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#a200a3\">Surround Yourself with Positivity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignleft has-background-dim\" style=\"min-height:325px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"934\" height=\"1024\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-2459\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dr.-Kortni-Alston-934x1024.jpg\" data-object-fit=\"cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dr.-Kortni-Alston-934x1024.jpg 934w, https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dr.-Kortni-Alston-274x300.jpg 274w, https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dr.-Kortni-Alston-768x842.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dr.-Kortni-Alston-1402x1536.jpg 1402w, https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Dr.-Kortni-Alston.jpg 1752w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 934px) 100vw, 934px\" \/><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dr. Kortni Alston<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPositive psychology is the scientific study of optimal human functioning,\u201d Alston said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When considering mental health and well-being, it is important to form positive relationships and surround yourself with positive accountability partners who will help you acknowledge when you need a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#a200a3\">Have Good Sleep Hygiene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rest and relaxation can be crucial for maintaining good mental health. \u201cWe do need sleep and we don\u2019t really need a reason to rest. I think rest is actually a part of productivity,\u201d Reynolds said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that you are getting enough sleep by developing a nighttime routine. Without proper rest, it becomes difficult to remain productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#a200a3\">Disconnect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a working journalist, it becomes difficult to step away from the media to focus on yourself. This is an important part of self-care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou really have to set boundaries and be aware of what your limits are,\u201d Gillespie said. Spending time to recognize what makes you happy is also an essential part of listening to yourself, but it does not always happen right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#a200a3\">Talk to Someone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI definitely suggest therapy\u2026 or maybe talking to someone who is not a therapist that they love and trust,\u201d Reynolds said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking with a trained therapist can always be helpful, but even speaking with trusted friends and family when you are experiencing issues with your mental health can be very helpful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gillespie suggests talking to someone when you begin to feel that something is off with your behavior. If you are not quite at a place where you are comfortable speaking openly, writing in a journal can be a first step.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#a200a3\">Celebrate Your Successes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really about setting parameters for your life and then really taking a moment to count your blessings and recognize your successes,\u201d Gillespie said. \u201cEven if they are small, every success is [a] success, no matter how large it is.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some challenges can come from feeling like you are not where you are supposed to be in life. It comes from comparing your journey to others and not allowing yourself to celebrate your own success, he said. Even small steps are moving in the right direction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#a200a3\">Resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are experiencing issues with your mental health as a Black journalist, there are many resources that can help.
