{"id":763,"date":"2018-08-03T15:33:59","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T20:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/?p=763"},"modified":"2021-08-18T11:33:31","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T16:33:31","slug":"four-years-later-flint-worries-its-being-forgotten","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/four-years-later-flint-worries-its-being-forgotten\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Years Later, Flint Worries It\u2019s Being Forgotten"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By ARIELLE BRUMFIELD<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NABJ Monitor<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DETROIT \u2014 In an effort to restore the city\u2019s finances, the city\u2019s water supply was switched from its current provider Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to a city-built pipeline, Karegnondi Water Authority, that draws water from the Flint River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the water, which was 70 percent harder than the previous source, corroded the city\u2019s pipes..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents started to notice discoloration, odor and sediment in their drinking water. The Environmental Protection Agency tested the water and found dangerous levels of lead and other toxins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health problems including Legionnaires disease began plaguing city residents soon after Flint started using the river water. Legionnaires disease, a severe form of pneumonia, can cause severe sickness or even become fatal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Mary Sheffield said Tuesday during a town hall meeting, hosted by the Detroit Chapter of NABJ, that not enough is being done for Flint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are literally 40 minutes away from Flint.
