{"id":752,"date":"2018-08-03T16:49:39","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T21:49:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/?p=752"},"modified":"2021-08-18T11:34:15","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T16:34:15","slug":"annual-jshop-offers-high-school-students-hands-on-learning-at-convention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/annual-jshop-offers-high-school-students-hands-on-learning-at-convention\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual JSHOP offers high school students hands-on learning at convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By BRE\u2019ANNA GRANT<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NABJ Monitor<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eleven high school students are learning how to be journalists this week at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students, who are from Detroit, Los Angeles and Houston, are participating in JSHOP, an interactive workshop to teach journalism fundamentals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2009<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the program has provided mentorship from professional journalists, educators and journalism college students through lectures, presentations and hands-on training. By the end of the workshop, students will have enhanced their newsgathering, writing, photography, video production, radio, graphic design, editing and social media skills, according to the NABJ website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe consider ourselves an important pipeline to training and inspiring the next generation of journalists,\u201d said JSHOP Director Sheryl Kennedy Haydel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The application process is a competitive, Haydel said, but the goal is to reach students in the host city of NABJ\u2019s annual convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome students are sure of what they want to do and others are curious and open to it,\u201d she said. \u201cMany have maybe never done it before but might be interested in a career in media.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day, students work on story ideas, interviewing and writing. Haydel said mentors set high expectations for the students because they know the students can handle it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom the experience, we want them to feel like they were totally cared for and met a group of mentors who were 1,000 percent invested in them,\u201d Haydel said, \u201cnot only to be a journalist but to be their best self.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sophomore Clare Jones of Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan, said JSHOP is a way to improve her writing and an opportunity for networking and exposure. Jones also finds the conference humbling and exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMostly in this area, there aren\u2019t a lot of programs that help students with their writing sources and overall English in general except if you\u2019re in school or have a tutor,\u201d Jones said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the workshop, students wrote profiles on each other and Jones did a profile on Eva Coleman, this year convention\u2019s chairwoman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI really like the program,\u201d Jones said. \u201cIt\u2019s very beneficial. I\u2019m making a lot of connections with national journalists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Hawkins, a rising sophomore at Seven Lakes High School in Houston, Texas, applied for JSHOP to learn more about the journalism business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are a lot of mentors and experts here who are willing to help,\u201d Hawkins said. \u201cThe deadline is preparing me for what\u2019s to come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlotte Bachelor, who graduated from Lakeview High School in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan, and will be attending Michigan State University in the fall, saw JSHOP as a great way to bridge her high school journalism experience to college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was newspaper and yearbook editor for 2\u00bd years, and this is a great opportunity,\u201d Bachelor said. \u201cI\u2019m gaining a lot of experience that I can put on my resume to show people that I care and invest in my craft.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>By BRE\u2019ANNA GRANT NABJ Monitor &nbsp; Eleven high school students are learning how to be journalists this week at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention.
