{"id":747,"date":"2018-08-03T15:05:21","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T20:05:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/?p=747"},"modified":"2021-08-18T11:34:33","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T16:34:33","slug":"media-related-rep-special-election-called-off-after-membership-bucks-board-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/media-related-rep-special-election-called-off-after-membership-bucks-board-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Media-related rep special election called off after membership bucks board decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By MAYA KING<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NABJ Monitor<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DETROIT \u2014NABJ members acted swiftly Friday, reversing course on an earlier decision by the board of directors to hold a special election for the media-related representative\u2019s race.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-03-at-7.08.37-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-819 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-03-at-7.08.37-PM-300x122.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-03-at-7.08.37-PM-300x122.png 300w, https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-03-at-7.08.37-PM.png 335w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plans for the special election were called off, and the NABJ media-related members who had not yet cast a vote\u00a0were instructed to vote for their representative by 5 p.m. Friday. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Via Twitter, NABJ declared a tie between Terry Allen and Tanzi West Barbour, stating: \u201cAll eligible voters will be notified of next steps.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those steps were not made available as of press time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media-related representative serves as a liaison between the board and the members of NABJ who work in public relations and other media-adjacent professions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Friday\u2019s business meeting, the move to call off the special election for that position came after some heated discussion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NABJ members and board members\u30fcparticularly those who did not attend Monday\u2019s board of directors meeting\u30fcraised questions about the rationale for the special election, which had been set for Aug. 13-20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Board members had decided to hold a special election after Haniyyah Sharpe-Brown, a mentor with the 2018 Student Projects public relations team, pulled out of the race. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharpe-Brown ended her campaign on July 10 after being informed that the sponsorship she received from the student project\u30fcwhich covers travel, food and lodging for students and mentors\u30fccould represent a conflict of interest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Sharpe-Brown\u2019s withdrawal, her name was left on the ballot and her resignation wasn\u2019t noted on the online ballot for 17 days. That left some board members concerned about votes cast for her while she was no longer an official candidate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharpe-Brown remained on the ballot through the election with a stipulation outlining her withdrawal from the race. Terry Allen and Tanzi West Barbour also remained on the ballot. West is the CEO of 1016 Media and a senior account executive for FedEx Services. Barbour is the chief communications officer of Wayfinder Foundation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday, former NABJ President Vanessa Williams introduced the motion to rescind the board\u2019s decision to hold a special election.
