{"id":3234,"date":"2023-08-07T14:30:46","date_gmt":"2023-08-07T19:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/?p=3234"},"modified":"2024-08-01T10:20:26","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T15:20:26","slug":"popular-birmingham-lunch-spot-yo-mamas-has-sights-on-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabjmonitor.com\/2024\/popular-birmingham-lunch-spot-yo-mamas-has-sights-on-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular Birmingham lunch spot Yo Mama\u2019s has\u00a0sights on expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Taylyn Tolbert<br>NABJ JSHOP<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With long lines for lunch that could stretch down the block, Crystal Peterson, co-owner of Yo Mama\u2019s restaurant, is driven to get customers\u2019 orders out as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to make sure we pair good food with good service,\u201d Peterson, who works alongside her mother, Denise Peterson, told the NABJ JSHOP Reporter. \u201cThis is what matters the most.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The family-owned operation with its sights set on expansion, was founder and owner Denise Peterson\u2019s idea in 2014. Peterson, a Florida A&amp;M University graduate, used the love of her alma mater as inspiration for the eatery\u2019s vibe, even right down to FAMU\u2019s vibrant orange and green school colors. Yo Mama\u2019s menu consists of a wide range of homemade options including chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, hot wings, bacon-wrapped meatloaf, cheesy mashed potatoes, and peach cobbler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The downtown Birmingham hotspot is one of many small businesses in town positioned to expand its operations. Yo Mama\u2019s has recently received a $1.7 million city grant that will help them someday move to a new location, Crystal Peterson said. The restaurant\u2019s hope is that it will give them an even bigger impact in the community, Crystal Peterson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edward Bowser, Birmingham\u2019s deputy director of communications, agrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a short span of time, Yo Mama\u2019s has become a pillar of Birmingham\u2019s food scene,\u201d Bowser said. \u201cTheir growth is not just proof positive of their success, but an example of the growing opportunities for all small business owners in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crystal Peterson said Yo Mama\u2019s upcoming changes fall in line with its longstanding \u201cKnow your customer\u201d motto her family swears by.
